Campsites in Death Valley National Park are assigned on a first come, first served basis. Knowing this, we got up early on Sunday morning, skipped church and rushed to get one of the 14 full-service sites. Plan B, if we didn’t make it on time, was to take one of the many no service sites, but this would have meant, no air-conditioning and no water – a sketchy proposition in the desert. When we arrived at Stovepipe Wells, in the middle of the park, we were thrilled to find that we were the first campers there. This place bills itself as “The Hottest Place on Earth”, since the temperature was recorded at a record 134 F (57 C) back in 1913. Today it was a moderate 99 F (37 C). We had a wonderful time hiking and then enjoyed the large pool, which we had all to ourselves. As it turned out, we ended up being the only campers! Suggestion to anyone tasked with naming a park: If you want to attract campers, avoid starting your name with the word "death"
